Lawmaker addresses Owerri Anglican Synod on electoral participation ahead of 2027 general election
Hon. Engr. Akarachi Amadi, Member representing Mbaitoli/Ikeduru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, has called on Christians to participate actively and responsibly in Nigeria’s political process, stressing the importance of conscience, integrity and civic responsibility in shaping the country’s leadership.
Amadi made the call on Friday, October 2, 2026, while addressing the 3rd Session of the 23rd Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Owerri on the theme, “The New Nigerian Electoral Act: Imperative for Christian Participation/Engagement in the 2027 General Election.”
The session, held at the invitation of the Lord Bishop of the Diocese, Rt. Rev. Chukwuma Chinekezi Opara, Ph.D., JP, brought together church leaders and participants to discuss the role of Christians in the electoral process and the broader implications of civic engagement for national development.
In his address, the lawmaker encouraged Christians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), participate in elections and make voting decisions guided by their conscience, values and convictions.
He argued that politics should not be viewed solely as a contest for power but also as an avenue for contributing to responsible leadership, good governance and the common good.
Amadi also challenged the perception that politics is inherently evil, noting that withdrawing from the political process does not prevent political decisions from affecting the lives of individuals and communities. He urged Christians to bring their values and principles into public life rather than abandon the space to others.
The federal lawmaker further emphasized that meaningful civic participation requires more than expressing concerns about governance. According to the message of his presentation, citizens must be prepared to take practical steps, including voter registration, informed participation and the responsible exercise of their electoral rights.
The engagement featured an interactive question-and-answer session during which Amadi responded to questions from participants on issues surrounding electoral participation and the responsibilities of Christians in the democratic process.
The discussion provided an opportunity for members of the Synod to seek clarification on the issues raised and further explore the relationship between faith, civic duty and national development.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of an Award of Excellence Performance, naming Hon. Akarachi Amadi an “Ambassador of the Church.” The recognition followed his participation in the Synod and his engagement with the congregation on civic responsibility and Christian involvement in public affairs.
Receiving the recognition, Amadi expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Anglican Diocese of Owerri for the invitation and honour, describing the engagement as an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility of citizens to contribute to the development of society.
The event underscored the importance of sustained conversations between religious institutions and citizens on democratic participation, ethical leadership and the future of Nigeria as the country approaches the 2027 general election.
