The House of Representatives Committee on Oceans and Fisheries, chaired by Hon. Engr. Akarachi Etinosa Amadi<\/strong>, hosted a landmark Public Hearing<\/em> at the National Assembly complex, focused on three pivotal legislative bills aimed at strengthening Nigeria\u2019s marine and fisheries sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hearing welcomed a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from government agencies, the private sector, academia, NGOs, and community leaders\u2014gathered to provide input and feedback on the proposed bills. The bills under review include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. A Bill for an Act to Amend the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act (CAP.A12)<\/strong> to establish the Federal College of Fisheries Technology and Marine Studies<\/strong> in Rivers State (HB 2189).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal Institute for Diving Technology<\/strong> in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State, for the provision of full-time courses in deep sea and oceans diving (HB 112).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. A Bill for an Act to Amend the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria Act<\/strong> to establish the Brackish Water Fisheries Research Institute<\/strong> in Rivers State (HB 2349).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    In his welcome address<\/strong>, Hon. Akarachi Amadi emphasized the committee\u2019s commitment to developing Nigeria\u2019s blue economy and ensuring that young Nigerians have access to quality education and training in the ocean and fisheries sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe must build the institutions that prepare our citizens for the future. Our marine and freshwater resources can unlock job creation, food security, and sustainable economic growth if properly harnessed,\u201d said Hon. Amadi.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

    The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D., GCON<\/strong> was represented by the Deputy Minority Whip Hon. George Ozodinobi, who declared the public hearing open with a keynote address<\/strong> reaffirming the House\u2019s support for inclusive legislation that promotes research, innovation, and long-term development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Members of the House Committee on Oceans and Fisheries were also present and contributed meaningfully to the deliberations, alongside participating stakeholders who commended the initiative and provided constructive feedback on the proposed bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The event featured an interactive session<\/strong>, followed by a vote of thanks and closing remarks<\/strong>, underscoring the collaborative approach of the Committee in shaping impactful legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hon. Amadi expressed his appreciation to the Speaker, fellow Committee members, and all stakeholders who honored the invitation and participated actively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
